The easiest way to get your message across on Twitter is to use Twitterfeed. It simply posts your new threads via your RSS feed on to Twitter. Set up a username with your main keyword, so anyone searching for it will find your tweets. See this example for what it looks like. Within a day of setting this example up for them, this was posted in the Introductions forum: “I’m a previous member returning to the fold.. I found it whilst surfing on Twitter“. That made the simple effort of setting up Twitterfeed worth it. Search for others with your keyword and follow them. Then sit back and wait for others to follow you. The eg linked above has got 110 followers (as of today), which is not a lot, but given the very specialized forum topic, its probably pretty awesome. Periodically search Twitter for more people worth following. They may reciprocate and follow you, and come to the forum when something interests them.
If you have no idea what Twitter is, then read this: Twitter Basics. If you want to know more on how to use Twitter to your advantage, then try Twitter Rockstar (there is plenty of other rubbish on the web for sale on Twitter, but I think Twitter Rockstar is value for money at $47). There are also many Twitter Forums available. Once you have signed up, you need to get followers.
I also use Twitterfeed to send the ForumDr RSS feed to twitter.
EDIT (21 Oct): Use can now use Twitter feed to send your forum RSS feed to Facebook
